Credit cards remain one of the most familiar ways to fund an online casino account, and Visa and Mastercard are accepted at the majority of licensed operators across continental Europe. But credit card gambling is not legal everywhere: the United Kingdom banned it outright in 2020, and Ireland has moved to restrict it under the 2024 Gambling Regulation Act. This guide explains where you can and cannot use a credit card, how Visa and Mastercard behave at casinos, the fees and cash-advance charges to watch for, how withdrawals work, and the safer alternatives worth considering.

Casinos accepting credit cards
The casinos listed above all accept Visa and Mastercard credit cards from players in the European countries where credit-card gambling is permitted. Each operator holds a licence from a recognised regulator such as the Malta Gaming Authority or a national authority in markets like Germany, Sweden, Denmark or Spain, and each has been assessed against our published criteria. You can read exactly how we score payment reliability, licensing and player protection on our how we rate casinos page.
A credit card deposit is usually instant. You enter your 16-digit card number, expiry date and CVV, complete a 3-D Secure (Verified by Visa or Mastercard Identity Check) step, and the funds appear in your casino balance within seconds. Because the payment is authenticated by your bank, credit card deposits also tend to clear the casino’s own verification checks quickly, which can speed up your first withdrawal later on.
Before you deposit, it is worth confirming two things: that your country is one where credit-card gambling is legal, and that your own card issuer permits gambling transactions. Many European banks allow them, but some block the merchant category entirely as a responsible-lending measure. If you want to compare operators more broadly before committing, our best online casinos list is the place to start, and our casino bonuses page covers the welcome offers that credit-card deposits typically qualify for.
Where credit card gambling is banned
This is the single most important section of this page, because using a credit card to gamble is simply not allowed in some jurisdictions, regardless of which casino you choose.
United Kingdom. Since 14 April 2020, the UK Gambling Commission has prohibited all licensed gambling operators from accepting credit cards. The ban applies to online and most offline gambling and was introduced because research showed credit-card gamblers were more likely to experience harm by betting with borrowed money. If you are a UK resident, no licensed operator may take your credit card, and this site does not target UK players.
Ireland. Ireland’s Gambling Regulation Act 2024 established a new regulator, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, with the power to restrict payment methods. The Act provides for prohibiting the use of credit cards for gambling, in line with the UK approach, as the new licensing regime is phased in. If you are in Ireland you should treat credit-card gambling as restricted and check the current position with the regulator before depositing.
Other European rules. Elsewhere in Europe the picture varies by country rather than by a single EU-wide rule. Some national regulators and individual banks limit or block credit-card gambling as part of consumer-protection or anti-money-laundering frameworks, while many EU markets continue to permit it. Because this is governed at national level and changes over time, always confirm the rules for your own country. Our overview of online casino legality in Europe explains how licensing and payment rules differ across the continent.
The practical takeaway: credit-card acceptance at a casino does not override the law where you live. If credit-card gambling is banned or restricted in your jurisdiction, use a permitted method instead.
Visa vs Mastercard at casinos
For the player, Visa and Mastercard work in almost exactly the same way at an online casino. Both are globally accepted card networks, both support 3-D Secure authentication, and both process deposits instantly. The network itself does not decide whether your transaction succeeds; that is down to your card issuer and the casino’s acquiring bank.
A few practical differences are worth knowing. Acceptance can vary slightly by operator and region, so a casino might display a Visa logo but process Mastercard through a different provider, or vice versa. Withdrawal support also differs: Visa offers a “Visa Direct” push-to-card payout and Mastercard offers “Mastercard Send”, but not every casino or every issuing bank supports receiving refunds to a credit card (more on that below).
In short, choose whichever card you already hold and your bank permits. There is no meaningful player advantage to one network over the other at a casino; reliability depends far more on your issuer’s gambling policy than on the Visa versus Mastercard distinction.
Fees, cash advance charges and declines
This is where credit cards differ sharply from debit cards, and where the real cost can hide. Many banks treat a gambling deposit made on a credit card as a cash advance rather than a purchase. A cash advance typically carries an upfront fee (often a percentage of the amount) and, crucially, interest that starts accruing immediately with no interest-free grace period. That means a casino deposit funded this way can begin costing you money the moment it leaves your account.
The reason is partly technical. Gambling transactions are tagged with the merchant category code MCC 7995, the dedicated code for betting and lottery. Your bank can see this code and apply its own policy: process it as a normal purchase, process it as a cash advance with fees, or decline it entirely.
That same MCC 7995 flag is the most common reason a card is declined. Other frequent causes include: your bank blocking gambling transactions by policy; insufficient available credit; a failed or abandoned 3-D Secure step; the casino not being licensed to accept players from your country; or routine fraud-prevention triggers on an unfamiliar merchant. A decline is not necessarily a problem with the casino, and it is often resolved by calling your bank or switching to a debit card or e-wallet.
Before using a credit card, check your card’s terms for the cash-advance rate and any gambling surcharge. If your bank treats casino deposits as cash advances, a debit alternative is almost always cheaper.
Withdrawals to cards
Depositing with a credit card is straightforward; withdrawing to one is not always possible. Historically casinos could only refund winnings back to the original card up to the amount you deposited, treating anything beyond that as a separate payout. Many operators now support push-to-card payouts via Visa Direct or Mastercard Send, but there are limits to be aware of.
First, not every issuing bank accepts incoming credit-card payouts; some will only receive refunds to a debit card. Second, a refund to a credit card reduces your outstanding balance rather than paying out cash you can spend elsewhere, which is one reason some banks and casinos prefer to send winnings to a debit card or bank account. Third, casinos commonly require you to withdraw using a method you have already used to deposit, as part of their anti-money-laundering checks.
The realistic expectation is this: you may be able to receive a refund up to your deposit amount on your credit card, but net winnings are often paid to a debit card, bank transfer or e-wallet instead. If fast, reliable withdrawals matter to you, choosing a debit or e-wallet method from the start can avoid surprises.
Alternatives to credit cards
If credit-card gambling is banned where you live, if your bank treats deposits as cash advances, or if you simply prefer not to gamble with borrowed money, there are several widely accepted alternatives at European casinos.
Debit cards. A Visa or Mastercard debit card works just like a credit card at the cashier but draws on money you already hold, so there is no cash-advance interest and spending stays within your own funds. For most players this is the simplest like-for-like swap.
Apple Pay. Where supported, Apple Pay lets you deposit using a card stored on your device, authenticated with Face ID or Touch ID. It keeps your real card number hidden from the casino and is quick on mobile, though the underlying card still follows your bank’s gambling rules.
Trustly and open-banking transfers. Trustly moves money directly from your bank account to the casino with no card involved. It is popular across the Nordics and much of Europe, supports fast withdrawals, and avoids card fees entirely.
Prepaid vouchers. A method like paysafecard lets you deposit a fixed, prepaid amount with no bank card at all, which also makes it a useful budgeting tool.
Crypto. Some licensed operators accept cryptocurrency deposits. These can be fast and low-fee, but values are volatile and consumer protections differ from regulated card payments, so they suit experienced users who understand the trade-offs.
Responsible gambling and help
The 2020 UK credit-card ban exists for a reason: gambling with borrowed money makes it easier to spend more than you can afford and harder to recognise when things are going wrong. Even where credit cards remain legal, treat any deposit as money you are prepared to lose, never as credit to be repaid from winnings.
Set a deposit limit before you play and use the tools licensed casinos must provide: deposit and loss limits, session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion. If gambling has stopped being fun, or you are using credit to chase losses, step away and seek support. Free, confidential help is available across Europe through national helplines and organisations such as GamCare and GambleAware, and through local services listed by your national regulator. Our responsible gambling page has more guidance and links.
Gambling is for adults only. You must be 18 or over (or the legal age in your country) to open an account, and online gambling should always be approached as entertainment, not a way to make money.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a credit card at an online casino? It depends on where you live. In most continental European countries where credit-card gambling is legal, yes, provided your own bank permits gambling transactions. In the United Kingdom credit-card gambling has been banned since April 2020, and in Ireland it is being restricted under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. Always confirm the rules in your jurisdiction and check your card issuer’s policy before depositing.
Why was my card declined? The most common reason is that your bank blocks gambling transactions, which are tagged with merchant category code MCC 7995. Other causes include insufficient available credit, a failed 3-D Secure verification, the casino not being licensed for your country, or a routine fraud check. A decline is often resolved by contacting your bank or using a debit card or e-wallet instead.
Can I withdraw to a credit card? Sometimes. Many casinos can refund winnings to your credit card up to the amount you deposited using Visa Direct or Mastercard Send, but not every issuing bank accepts incoming credit-card payouts, and a refund reduces your balance rather than paying out spendable cash. Net winnings are frequently paid to a debit card, bank transfer or e-wallet instead, and most operators require you to withdraw to a method you have already used to deposit.
